eco-friendly bathroom DIY ideas

Here are some of the best and most creative DIY ideas for an eco-friendly bathroom.

DIY Bathroom Decor

1. Transform your wall with faux bricks

Bathroom with Faux Brick Wall DIY idea

Bricks are harmful to the environment because the clay used to make them needs to be mined out of the earth, and high amounts of fuel is used to dry the bricks.

Instead, use wallpaper that resembles faux bricks, and with a little extra paintwork, you can get a weathered faux brick look that resembles real bricks, but without the environmental impact.

2. Make a Bathroom Storage Set

If you’ve got mason jars or old glass jars hanging around, repurpose some into a bathroom storage set for your toothbrushes, hand soap, etc.

Making your own bathroom storage set is a great way to upcycle old jars and reduce your waste.

This bathroom storage DIY by Mason Jars Crafts Love uses chalk paint and is finished with a little distressing.

3. Paint Your Sink Instead of Buying New

Ugly sink? Instead of buying a new countertop for your sink, or an entire sink for your bathroom, opt for a more eco-friendly solution – just paint it!

It’s not that difficult to paint a sink and painting your bathroom sink will be a lot cheaper and greener than buying brand new.

4. Frame Your Mirror With Wood

Wood can help transform any room, like this wood-framed mirror by a Cherished Bliss.

By simply framing your bathroom mirror with wood, it creates a beautiful accent in the room.

Do you have pieces of reclaimed wood hanging around? This is a great way to use them.

5. Build a Storage Ladder

We could all use a little more storage, no matter the room in our home and this DIY bathroom ladder is perfect for just that.

By using some pieces of wood, you can add more storage in your bathroom without taking up much space.

6. Build a Toilet Paper Stand

Making things yourself is one of the most sustainable things you can do because you’re removing so many middlemen!

Create small things yourself like this toilet paper stand out of wood. This DIY for your bathroom is super easy, minimalist, practical and won’t hurt your wallet.

7. Make a Stone Bath Mat

Want to feel like you’re in a spa? Create this eco-friendly bath mat out of stones that will last longer and it looks amazing!

Use rocks from your local river or beach (make sure they’re smooth) and glue them individually on a rubber bath mat.

8. Reuse corks for a bathmat

Got a lot of corks from wine bottles stocked up? Another idea for a bathmat is to make one out of wine corks.

It’s pretty simple. Boil the corks to allow them to soften up for you to cut, cut them in half and glue them on a rubber mat.

Check out Sustain my Craft Habit for this cork bathmat tutorial.

9. Add stone to your tub

Similar to the faux brick wall, use faux bricks to accent your bathroom like this DIY idea for your bathtub.

Use faux stones like AirStone, which is an ultra-light recycled material that looks and feels like real stone.

10. Spray Paint Your Shower Fixtures

Instead of purchasing new shower and bath fixtures, buy some eco-friendly spray paint to give them new life. Simply tape around the fixtures and get to spray painting.

Go see Bless’er House for the whole process on how to paint shower fixtures.

11. Build a Wood Towel Rack

Once again with the wood, but who doesn’t love wood?

Make your own towel rack with some wood and drill hooks in it.

Find the tutorial for this towel rack at Dwelling in Happiness.

12. Use Rope as Towel Holders

DIY Bathroom towel holder idea using rope

Instead of a bathroom wall hook for your towels, take it to the next level and use rope as towel holders.

There are different types of rope that will make a difference on the level of eco-friendliness (is that a word?) that you’re going for.

Try and use a plant-based rope such as hemp, cotton, sisal, and avoid polyester. Polyester is made from petroleum, which is a byproduct of processing oil, which is definitely not planet-friendly.

13. Homemade Natural Shampoo

Shampoo doesn’t need to be bought in bottles.

As an eco-friendly, plastic-free alternative, just make your own shampoo bar, like this rosemary mint shampoo bar from Grow Forage Cook Ferment.

If making a zero-waste soap bar isn’t possible, you can always buy some. I use bar shampoo and conditioner from Unwrapped Life and I am in love with them!

14. DIY Dry Shampoo

15. Zero-Waste Conditioner

Try making this 4 in 1 bar soap from Going Zero Waste that cleans your entire body, saves you space in the bathroom, and helps you say goodbye to plastic.

18. Use Reusable Bottles in the Bathroom

resusable glass bottles for bathroom cleaners

If you don’t want to make your own soaps for your bathroom, using reusable bottles is the second-best way to use reduce plastic regarding products that come in plastic containers.

Buy some reusable bottles, and when you buy your body wash, shampoo and conditioner, buy them in bulk and transfer them into the better-looking bottles.

Buying in bulk = less plastic = better for the environment – and it looks 100% better.
